The Observers Stand 17

The Observers Stand
Editors Note:
By David Brown
The year has pushed past the halfway point and all of OVR’s programs have held or are about to hold events. I was happy to accept photos from Road Racing, Solo, and Rallycross from Michael Berchak at Berchak Media for publication in this issue of The Observers Stand. If you want to see photos of your car or your group please send them to me. I don’t create content, but I do compile it. Coming up very soon will be our Time Trial and OVR Sprints at Mid-Ohio. If you plan to register to drive or volunteer please register quickly. The Solo Governors Cup is coming up this weekend and soon our very popular Solo PAX Challenge begins. As always, Rallycross is stirring up the dust and dirt and from what I understand the drive is worth it.I got to sample the new pavement at Mid-Ohio as a driver of the Pace Car and I brought along the tcr flag that once belonged to Phil Alspach for another weekend at the track. As most of our region knows, Phil lived OVR and he LOVED OVR. Coming up August 10th and 11th we will be celebrating Phil during the OVR Sprints. If you would like to come please see the message below and plan to come to the track. Please note the registration hours.Elections will be coming up soon. If you intend to run for open Board of Directors positions or Regional Executive nominations will be held September 4th at El Vaquero in Powell. As always I wish I had more to put in this issue, but for now this will do.

Area 4 Director Update for April 2024

Race season must be coming along soon as I am starting to travel quite a bit in support of the Division, the Area, the Club, and its programs. Trips to Detroit and Kansas City were on the docket this month.

So, here’s what I did this past month…..

Video Conference Meetings:

➢ Board of Directors (BoD) (3/4): Our February meeting was moved to the first week of March. Once again, our financials look solid. Yes, it’s early in the calendar year but we are meeting budgetary figures. This was the last month before our annual audit which will likely be held in April. Results from that audit will be posted on the SCCA website. We received an update from the Compensation Committee about Mike Cobb’s salary and bonus package. We were informed of a couple of additions to the staff. Jeff Barrow will replace Deanna Flanagan as Director of Road Racing (link). The Club hired a Media Marketing Manager and a Social Media Coordinator (see details here). As the Club moves away from a monthly magazine, these new folks will help market the Club across many different platforms.

➢ Club Racing Board (CRB) (3/5): The group ran through the usual early season letters. A conversation was had about the introduction of Radical sports racers to our array of classes. Apparently there are a lot of them racing across the country and they are looking for a place to compete that’s less expensive.

They also worked on some agenda items for the face to face meeting to be held in Kansas City later in the month. The results of all of the CRB rules changes can be seen here.

➢ Electrified Vehicle Advisory Committee (EVAC) (3/13): The group started working on a “Fact Sheet” for regions and venues to use when investigating EV participation. We’ll also work on a definition of “hybrid” for the SCCA. As there are so many variants of a hybrid EV, we need to specify the language for our members. This will help see what cars can compete and how we deal with them.

➢ Touring Advisory Committee (TAC) (3/18): As the EVAC has been working on language for a Touring

Electric class, the TAC had some questions about the rules package. I sat in on their meeting and discussed the rules set with them. They offered some valuable suggestions and I walked away with some action items.

➢ BoD (3/25): The financials slipped a bit from budget over the last month. Nothing serious and somewhat expected as the competition season has barely started. We got an update from Heyward Wagner on the status of the Club Spec program. We approved both Club Spec Musting and Miata MX5 rules packages. We also approved the name change for the Endurance Racing Board to the Race Experience Board and their rules package. I updated the board on the CRB’s decisions for the program.

Unfortunately, we also had to discuss a couple of members behaving badly.

SCCA Events:

➢ GLDiv Convention (3/1, 3/2): The divisional convention was held at a different location this year as our old facility was under construction. That said, this site (The Summit in Fort Wayne) turned out to be a nicer offering. Like last year’s event, several honchos from the National Office attended. They addedmuch welcomed guidance. When you have national, divisional and regional managers in one room discussing a program, good things happen. Ideas about best practices and policy flow up and down the food chain and all walk away from the conversation wiser. I hope you will consider attending next year.

The date (2/28, 3/1) and same location have been set and details will follow as they become available.

➢ Detroit Region banquet (3/10): Melinda and I were invited to the annual banquet held by Detroit Region. As they had a very tight agenda for the awards portion of the evening, I limited my remarks and only spoke for a few minutes. The dinner was nice (Mediterranean buffet) and the conversation at our table was fabulous. We had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

➢ CRB (3/22, 3/23): Like last spring’s meeting, this gathering was solely focused on the long term and strategic planning for the Club Racing program. I spoke with the CRB Chair (John LaRue) several times over the last few months on this topic. We agreed on many points and chatted about how to guide the conversation and keep everyone focused. Serious discussions were held and some serious decisions were made. Decisions that should have been made over the course of the last few years. But bold decisions about policy are tough to come by and this group should be commended for their aggressive conclusions. The changes made will take a few months to formulate and announce. It will take even longer to implement. Of course, these changes will not please everyone but rest assured that the CRB has the best intentions for long term program health. They made some necessary decisions.

Area 4 Director Update for May 2024

The meetings about racing are over and now it’s time, literally, for the rubber to hit the road. I’ll be heading to Mid Ohio for the Hoosier Super Tour event hosted by OVR this month.

So, here’s what I did this past month…..

Video Conference Meetings:

➢ Club Racing Board (CRB) (4/2): The CRB had its usual monthly meeting and they ran through scores of letters. The group also tied up some loose ends from our at the face to face meeting that was held in Kansas City last month. As the Hoosier Super Tour is well under way, a conversation was had about attendance at the June Sprints. Preparations are being made for the Runoffs as well. The results of all of the CRB rules changes can be seen here.

➢ Electrified Vehicle Advisory Committee (EVAC) (4/10): The Rally Cross Board (RXB) Chair (Gonzalo San Miguel) sat in on our meeting. His committee is wrestling with some EV related classification rules and was seeking guidance from us on how to construct the language needed. This was a big step for us.

We are now at the point where the EVAC has other program boards requesting guidance. This level of legitimacy is very much appreciated. We continue to work on a “Fact Sheet” for regions and venues to use when investigating EV participation. We the various definitions of “hybrid” for the SCCA. As there are so many variants of a hybrid EV, we need to specify the language for our members. This will help see what cars can compete and how we deal with them. We also discussed a new letter that came to us via the CRB letter portal.

➢ Board of Directors (BoD) (4/22): We reviewed the Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that has been written for the Directors to sign. As you can imagine, we discuss many details of Club operations that need to remain in confidence. If a Director deliberately leaks some of these details, it can be disastrous for the Club…..on a variety of levels. We also reviewed the compensation package that we’ve offered Mike Cobb. I gave an EVAC update for the group.

➢ CRB (4/25): A group from the CRB, BoD and Staff met via Zoom call to collate the ideas we worked on at our face to face meeting. Progress is being made but further work continues to be done.

Notes from the Director’s Chair

Area 4 Director Update for June/July 2024

Things continue to escalate across all programs as the warmer weather is here. Do yourself a favor and look into supporting or competing in an event near you. You will NOT be disappointed. As an aside, I am headed to the June Sprints (6/20-6/24) and then on to Oregon for a vacation with my wife (6/24 to 7/13). Due to these trips, I will not be able to compose and distribute an update for July.

So, here’s what I did this past month…..

Video Conference Meetings:

➢ Club Racing Board (CRB) (5/7): The CRB continued to work on some changes to the program. This is a continuation of their efforts gained from the face to face meeting back in March. As the Hoosier SuperTour (HST) season is almost over, the data collection for performance balance is nearly complete. Preparations for the Runoffs continue with a schedule posted. The results of all of the CRB rules changes can be seen here.

➢ Rally Cross Racing Board (RXB) (5/7): As the RXB Chair sat in on our Zoom call last month, it was our chance to return the favor. Paul Messier and I sat in on the RXB Zoom call this month and had a broader discussion with them on EV topics. We answered many questions for them, and the cross pollination continues to bear fruit.

➢ Electrified Vehicle Advisory Committee (EVAC) (5/8): We continue to work on a “Fact Sheet” for regions and venues to use when investigating EV participation. We also discussed several letters (and a new one) that came to us via the CRB letter portal.

➢ Board of Directors (BoD) (5/20): As usual, we started the meeting with the financial reports. The numbers still look good as all areas of the country are now hosting events. We are ahead of budget predictions in membership and income. Our annual audit has been completed and a report will be issued soon. Once again, “members behaving badly” was a topic of discussion during the meeting. A couple of specific cases were brought up. That we even have to have these conversations is a sad commentary on how our members decide to interact with each other.

SCCA Events:

➢ OVR @ Mid Ohio (5/17-5/19): This event was a Hoosier Super Tour. This was stop #8 on a ten race schedule. As it was the only HST in our division, I was eager to attend to see how it played out. Many of my friends (both drivers and volunteer workers) were there. The event was a mixed bag for me. First, many thanks to Peggy Dietz and her crew who opened registration an hour early Thursday evening to try and get folks processed for the weekend. I’m not sure what the details were but there were scores of trailers waiting to enter the track. They were not allowed to enter until after 7p. There were many frayed nerves. I feel sorry for the Tech folks who probably had to do dozens of annuals that evening. A word to the wise…..make arrangements to get your annual BEFORE you go to your first race. It may cost you gas money and/or a 12 pack, but it’s worth the effort so you don’t wait in a long line. It also makes the line shorter for the Tech crew. You both have better things to do.

All that said, as far as I could see, the event was very well staffed and there was a HUGE field with almost 300 cars. I heard many drivers acknowledge that the repaved track was nice and smooth with plenty of grip. With any luck, the course will invest in some infrastructure as well.

The event itself went pretty smoothly. I had the privilege to watch many sessions and saw some very good racing. As an ex Prod car driver, I paid particular attention to Group 6 (EP, FP, HP, GTL, BSpec). Both races were tight with lots of close racing throughout the field. They were not alone as I saw good close racing across many of the run groups.

A quick review of the event now that some time has passed tells me that the event was well run and officiated, well supported by both volunteers workers and drivers, and seems to have been a success.

Congrats to OVR for a job well done. Let’s hope their effort will draw a return for next season.
